                           ADULTS

The dictionary defines adult as fully-developed and mature, a grown-up.

Traditional demarcations and descriptions of adulthood beginning at 21 and ending at 65, are out of date. Physical maturity of being fully developed happens in our 20s, and has no correlation to evaluating our mental/emotional or spiritual maturity.

In today's world the 40s, 50s and 60s are simply platforms for new vision, creativity and actions. Ripening happens more slowly or quickly for some of us according to the conscious choices we make along the way.

What appears to be true is that as we mature, our journeys become more internally focused when we enter thresholds of recognizing ourselves as adults. Just as teens explore issues of identity and purpose, adults go through the process again with more self-reflection and depth of inner seeking. Less often do we compare ourselves to our peers. More often we examine the quality of life that we are living---re-valuing what is important.

The classes at The LifeWorks Institute offer inward-looking exploration that can give us renewed energy to be able to give back to the world without expectations of what we will get in return.

Tara Mandala Practice

One such class is the Tara Mandala Practice. Here is an excerpt from a dissertation on the history of this dance ritual written by Jessica McDaniel:

"For fifteen years, an American woman named Prema Dasara has traveled the world teaching a dance she created based on Tibetan Buddhist meditations to the Goddess Tara. While she uses the religious practices and symbols from another culture in performance, I think the Mandala Dance of the 21 Praises of Tara is an intercultural hybrid of "Eastern" philosophy and "Western" practice which allows for a cultural exchange rather than appropriation for it provides benefits for both the Tibetans and Euro-American participants and spectators. This is evident by the way the dance practice developed, how it compares to Euro-American women's rituals and traditional Tibetan practices, and the response of the participants and observers in several cultures. The dance provides spiritual, social, and material benefits."
